Teaching description
Advanced knowledge of the English language.
a) Knowledge and understanding.
During the laboratory hours, students are met with basic knowledge of legal English used in international texts (treaties, declarations, recommendations, binding EU acts, judgments), aimed at understanding the techniques of drafting these texts.
b) Ability to apply knowledge and understanding.
The laboratory aims to create basic skills in the participants for the drafting of international legal texts, thus applying the knowledge acquired from the analysis of the forms and editorial techniques of the international texts studied.
c) Autonomy of judgment.
If learning the rudiments of drafting techniques of legal texts in English does not develop in itself an autonomy of judgment (as happens, on the contrary, in material law courses), nevertheless a good command of these techniques improves the participants' critical reading skills of the types of legal text studied.
d) Communication skills.
The aim of the course is ultimately precisely to improve the ability to express oneself in written English as a function of a future drafting of legal texts.
e) Learning skills.
In order to stimulate the learning capacity of the participants, the legal texts selected as a model will be discussed in the class, also as a first exercise in applying legal English.
The laboratory is aimed at providing essential knowledge for understanding how to draft international and European Union legal texts in English.
The course/laboratory will be conducted through the constant involvement of the participants: targeted questions, common discussion of the analyzed texts and verification of the understanding of the drafting techniques identified will constitute the main methods.
Being a laboratory, the evaluation will focus on the achievement of a qualification by the enrolled students. To this end, the concrete participation of students during the hours of the laboratory will be fully taken into account. During the exam, the student will be asked to critically discuss a legal text in English of the type discussed and studied during the laboratory.
Please refer to the official calendar of the Department of Law
