Having a basic knowledge of the Sociology of Crime and its theoretical and methodological topics; being able to analyze social data.

This module will introduce students to core themes in the study of crime and deviance, encouraging students to approach these topics using their sociological imagination. The module will be divided in three parts. The first part will deal with the main theories in the field of deviance and crime,  from Enlightenment and Early Traditions to classical Sociologies of Crime to contemporary approaches. In the second part of the module, it will be provided an overview of the main themes of the criminal activities (crime trends, specific crime patterns, violence, drugs, sex crime, environmental crime, organised crime, global crime). The final part will deal with the main issues of the controll of crime (punishment, criminal justice system, police and policing, prisons, media).

Lecture with multimedia presentation, discussion, homework, tasks in groups. Workshops with experts and professionals.

For not attending students: the evaluation will be assessed by oral examination. Required readings are:
