Teaching description
A basic knowledge of medieval history and medieval archaeology, as well as of archaeology in general. A working knowledge of the English language is also required.
The course will examine the development of a conscience of the Middle Ages after the Renaissance, examining the development of cultural and artistic thought and expressions, from Walpole to the pre-Raphaelites and beyond. It will also provide a summary of the principal research trends and most significant findings in medieval archaeology across Europe, as well as presenting the state of knowledge as regards the Byzantine and medieval archaeology of the Terra d’Otranto, and the interpretation of the Middle Ages in modern times. Attention will, furthermore, be given to the use of scientific techniques and information technology, in the management, interpretation and presentation of data.
The lectures and study of the suggested bibliography, as well as research for essays, will allow the student to learn about the origins and current trends in the discipline. At the end of the course the student should be able to analyze, synthesize, organize and communicate information related to the main themes of the Middle Ages and of medieval archaeology.
The course will be based on lectures, illustrated with Powerpoint presentations. It is hoped that it can be arranged as seminars, with full participation of the students.
Students will be assessed through written and illustrated essays that will be discussed during final examination.
